Last week we had some intense and random weather. It would be sunny one minute, raining the next, extremely windy, and then hail! I was walking to the bus and had to stop and hold on to a pole b/c the wind literally blew me over. The waves were huge and apparently last weekend they were even bigger. The downtown area of Parte Vieja is on a mini peninsula and the waves were jumping the walls. The wall encompassing one of the main walk areas around Parte Vieja was knocked down from the waves and water rushed into that part of the city. Cars were pushed from one side of the street to the other and smashed into buildings and other cars. A few of my good friends live in an apartment on that main street of Parte Vieja and it was closed for a few days. The entrance to their building was flooded and cars were smashed under their window!
Parts of the beautiful white railings along La Concha beach were destroyed and some windows from the buildings along the water were broken. The walk ways are a disaster now and there is a lot of construction. The railings were older so I'm curious to see if they're going to replace everything or try to replicate its antiquity. As I was walking home from school the other day, there were crowds of older locals lining the walk ways, looking at the destruction and watching the workers. There is a really nice, expensive sports club/day spa that is Under the walk way along La Concha; it is right on the water. Well, all of the stationary bikes, treadmills, etc. were up on the sidewalks, covered in sand and many were disassembled. The sidewalk was covered with chairs, tables, work out equipment and other random things from the sports club and other restaurants with that "premier" location!
They are working really fast so things will be up and running soon. It's sad because parts of the city are temporarily destroyed but also, a lot of friends and family are coming to visit for Spring Break and now the city is covered in construction.
However, the last 2 days have been beautiful and it looks like today (Friday) is going to be another great day, in the upper 60's. Yeah for the sunshine! Kaitlin, Kelly, and I are going to our favorite sandwich shop and sit on the wall by the water again. It's usually a Saturday tradition, but we couldn't resist, it's our last day before we all break!
